  • Students will know how to determine proportion
  • Students will understand means and extremes
  • Students will know how to determine means and extremes
  • Students will understand the concepts of a cross product
  • Students will know how to use cross products

Fourth Grade - Fifth Grade - Sixth Grade - Seventh Grade

Note: This lesson also may be used by older students seeking business math review, for example, a refresher for those entering an administrative type position.

Lesson Activity:

  1. Talk about comparisons we make of everyday things – relationships between things
    • ask class for terms used to describe these relationships
  2. Introduce concept of ratio
    • present in terms of numbers of males in the class to females
    • present in first two forms x to y, x:y
    • work through examples
  3. Talk about the fraction form of a ratio x/y
    • reduce to lowest terms
    • work through examples
  4. Introduce rates
    • compare quantities that are not alike
    • ask for examples of rates
    • demonstrate using the common rate calculation for speed
    • work through examples
    • Work through examples solving for different variables
  5. Introduce proportions
    • explain the concept
    • explain means and extremes
  6. Introduce property of proportion
    • explain cross product
    • work through examples

Assessment/Evaluation
Have students complete the worksheet. A passing grade is 70% or greater.
