BASIC MATH - FRACTIONS:

Multiplying and Dividing

 

Understand how to multiply and divide fractions

 

 

Objectives:

  • Student will review the basics of adding and subtracting fractions
  • Students will know the definition of reciprocals in regards to fractions
  • Students will know how to multiply fractions
  • Students will know how to divide fractions
  • Students will know how to reduce fractions to their lowest terms
  • Students will understand complex fractions and how they operate

Suggested Grades:

Fourth Grade - Fifth Grade - Sixth Grade

Note: This lesson also may be used by older students seeking business math review, for example, a refresher for those entering an administrative type position.

 
 

 

MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING FRACTIONS LESSON PLAN

 

Teaching Materials

Lesson Activity:

  1. Review the mechanics of adding and subtracting fractions

  2. Talk about common denominators
    1. Method: multiply denominators by each other
    2. Work through examples

  3. Introduce the concept of reciprocals
    1. An inversion of the original fraction
    2. Show many examples, lots of class participation
    3. Discuss reciprocals of whole numbers

  4. Demonstrate multiplying by whole numbers

  5. Demonstrate dividing by whole numbers
    1. Reinforce idea of reciprocals

  6. Multiply fractions by fractions
    1. Introduce improper fractions and mixed numbers
    2. Work through examples

  7. Divide fractions by fractions
    1. Introduce improper fractions and mixed numbers
    2. Work through examples

  8. Introduce concept of lowest terms
    1. Ask class to define – see if they bring in the concept of “prime factors” on their own
    2. Work through examples

  9. Talk about complex fractions
    1. Ask class how they would tackle solving a problem
    2. Work through examples

Assessment/Evaluation
Have students complete the worksheet. A passing grade is 70% or greater.
