Teaching Materials

  • Lesson - Calculating a Sales Price Lesson (see below for printable lesson).

Lesson Excerpt:

To calculate a sales price, you first have to calculate the amount of a discount.

Do you remember how to calculate a discount?

If you know the original price of an object and the % of the discount, then you can calculate the discount off of the original price.
Let’s look at an example.

Example:
John is buying a new guitar.  The original price is $65.00.  It has been marked 15% off.  What is the amount of the discount?

To work on this problem, we can write this another way.
            What is 15% of 65?

Next, we need to write an equation.
            “What is” becomes x =
            15% becomes a decimal .15
            “of” means to multiply

Now we can write an equation.
