Suggested Lesson Plan for this Worksheet

Tipping is small sum of money given to someone for performing a service.  Tipping is also known as a gratuity.

It is a custom to give a tip at a restaurant to the waiter or waitress.  The tip is normally a percentage of the pre-tax amount of the bill.  The exact percentage to tip is for you to decide, depending on the quality of service and your own generosity, however, 15-20% of the pre-tax amount is usually considered an appropriate amount.

Additional notes:

Who else might also receive a tip at a restaurant?  This may include the maitre'd (head waiter), wine steward, bartender, other servers, and the coat check, and car parking attendant.

WORKSHEET Instructions

This worksheet gives students practice on calculating the tip amount.  Students need to fill in the table with the missing values for each of the problems.

The first column is the restaurant bill pre-tax amount.  Tipping is based on this amount.  The next two columns are the bill after-tax and the tip percentage.  Following those items are two columns that need to be filled in by the student.  Tip $ is the dollar amount of the tip based on the pre-tax bill amount.  The last column is total paid, which is the bill after-tax plus the tip $ amount.  As an option, the tip $ column may be automatically filled in, leaving the student only to calculate the total paid.
