CAREER EXPLORATION:

APPLYING YOURSELF LESSON PLAN

 

An introductory lesson plan and lesson on applying yourself for your future, work, and career. This lesson is intended to help students prepare for their future and to develop the life skills they will need to be successful in all their endeavors.

 

Subject: Career Education, Preparation, and Exploration

 

Objectives:

  • Become motivated to diligently prepare for your future

  • Come to the realization that what you get out of life is a direct result of what you put into it

  • Take responsibility for your own actions so you can reap the rewards that come from applying yourself to every activity you engage in

Suggested/Recommended Grade Levels:

9th-12th grade, Secondary Education, High School and Special Education

 

 

 

APPLYING YOURSELF CAREER LESSON PLAN

 

Materials:

 

Optional Pre-Lesson Preparation:

Research materials such as magazines and journals or other publications that profile successful people.

 

 

Instruction and Discussion

• Discuss the lesson’s objectives with the students.

• Instruct them to read the lesson and to answer the questions on the worksheet.

• Lead the students in discussing and sharing their ideas and answers from the worksheet.

 

 

Suggested Assignments or Activities

 

1. Interviews with successful people

 

Materials:

Assignment: Assign students to interview someone that they deem to be successful using the interview form noted under “Materials”. Make suggestions to spark their imagination. The successful people to be interviewed could be one of their family members, neighbors, a community leader, someone who works in a field they are interested in, one of their teachers, their religious leader, etc.

 

Activity: Once the assignment is completed encourage the students to openly discuss their results in the classroom or to make an oral presentation to the class.

 

Grading Criteria: The grading criterion for this assignment is subjective. The primary purpose of this assignment is to give students insight into the thought processes of successful people.

 

 

2. Research Paper

 

Materials:

  • Assignment 2

  • magazines and journals that profile successful people (optional)

Assignment: Assign students to conduct research on an individual who they believe to be successful. Suggest sources for the research such as the Internet, biographies from the library, magazine articles, newspaper clippings, etc.

 

Activity: Once the assignment is completed encourage students to openly discuss their findings or to make an oral presentation to the class.

 

Grading Criteria: The grading criterion for this assignment is subjective. The primary purpose of this assignment is to give students insight into the thought processes, experiences and actions of successful people.
