Protecting Yourself From Identity Theft
The problem of identity theft has become an ever increasing crisis in the 21st Century making it more important than ever to protect yourself from this type of unscrupulous criminal. The electronic age that we now live in has made this problem epidemic, and methods of protecting yourself have to be as sophisticated as the methods of theft.
First and foremost it is important never to give your personal information to anyone unless you can verify that they are authentic. Not only will these criminals call you on the phone and attempt to get personal information, but they will also use email as a method. It is common for these criminals to send emails that encourage you to input your name, social security number, and credit card number as well as pertinent passwords. These emails are often disguised as coming from a trusted company. The best way to protect yourself from these phishing emails is to never click on an email to go to a site that asks for personal information. If you must go to a site, do not do it from an email, and never if you do not know the company.
With telephone calls, do not give away personal information unless you have verified that the caller is authentic. To do this you will have to hang up and call back the company they say they are representing. The best thing you can do for yourself, is to not give out information to callers. If you have business with a company, call them, but don’t give out information to callers who say they represent any given company.
Always keep your operating system updated and use a firewall. There many viruses out there that can send all the information on your computer to the criminal element, this includes everything you type, such as your social security number and pass words. Security of your computer systems is essential.
Any paper work that contains your name or other vital information should not be left laying around. Either keep this paper work in a safe or shred it when you are ready to dispose of it. Many criminals go through mail boxes, cars and trash cans looking for information that will enable them to steal your identity. Another problem that many people may not realize is that some of the older credit card machines will print out your complete credit card number as well as name. If you frequent a business establishment that uses one of these machines, do yourself a favor and pay with cash.
An extension of this danger that you may run across is theft of your information from one of the companies that you do business with. This can be very difficult, if not impossible to protect yourself from. Your only real defense against this is to check the company’s background in technical security. If they have had customer information theft cases before, you may want to check for a new company to work with.
Identity theft can destroy your personal as well as financial security, and it is important to do all you can to protect yourself from this potentially disastrous situation.
