Travel Tips for Students
Young adults just getting out of high school or college dream of traveling abroad. They want to take some time off in between school and work and have an adventure. Most students feel that they are prepared to take on the world. Following these few simple tips will make your travels abroad that much easier and enjoyable.
The most important thing that you need in order to travel abroad is valid, signed passports and visas, if needed.
You should also ensure that your emergency information is filled in on your passport. Even if you are planning a backpacking trip across Europe you need to ensure that someone knows who to contact in the case of emergency.
A very good idea to is make a copy of your passport and your passport number. This information should be left with a family member or kept in a place that you know you cannot lose it. This information will be needed in case you lose your passport or if is stolen. Without it you will not be able to obtain a replacement passport.
You should also check weather reports and warnings before traveling to certain countries. This way you know what to look for and what supplies you will need to take with you. There is nothing worse then planning a trip to Greece, packing only shorts and a swimsuit to find that the weather report states there will be rain for two weeks and you have no raincoat. Checking ahead of time can also give you an idea of what places you want to visit and which you should stay away from. No one wants to spend their vacation in rain and wind everyday.
If you are traveling to a foreign country that has particular customs then you should familiarize yourself with these customs. Following the customs of the country will make your trip that more enjoyable. People will welcome you more and you may even find that you are able to experience more out of your trip then you had imagined. Also, following or knowing the customs of the country will protect you, as even though you are from Canada or the United States, while in a foreign country you are to follow their laws and rules. Knowing as much as you can about those laws is the only way to go.
You should leave an itinerary with a family member or friend so that someone knows where you are at all times.
If you are backpacking across Europe you might not be on a set schedule so you should leave a list of places that you intend to travel and approximate dates that you intend on reaching those places. It is also a good idea to check in with someone when you reach a particular destination. This way people know where you are and where you should be.
You should never leave your luggage unattended. Unattended luggage WILL be stolen and then you have nothing with you. We hear stories everyday of young people traveling to Europe, having their luggage and their passports stolen because they were too trusting and left their luggage unattended. It is sure to be stolen the minute you turn your back.
